Sherry Dongqi Bao

Interests

Literature

My favorite novels are The Razor’s Edge by W. Somerset Maugham and The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. I also read a lot Haruki Murakami when I was in high school.

Film

Just like my music and literature tastes, I love all kinds of movies. The movie I have watched the most times is Annie Hall (perhaps more than ten times).

DJ

I had a two-week DJ training at Pro DJ School in Amsterdam in 2019, while all my friends thought I was taking a course on data (jockey?). My favorite DJ mix is Mellow Works by DJ SHOTA.

Life logging

I have a habit of logging and tracking various activities, including movies, books, and restaurants. When I was really bored, I even cataloged all my friends and created a network map of them. I’m also an avid user of time tracking tools, planners, and expense tracking apps.

Outreach

PhD application guide

Some friends and I wrote an “ultimate” PhD application guide for Neuroscience/Psychology applicants 脑科学博士申请指南 (only in Chinese). It includes PhD application tips about early-stage preparation, finding research positions abroad, networking, choosing programs, preparing materials, interviews, etc. In this guide, I also shared my personal experience of gradually transitioning from pharmaceutical engineering to neuroscience/psychology. If you are in a similar situation and need help, feel free to reach out to me, and I’m happy to help!

Other

Speech impediment

As a person with a speech impediment, I care deeply about this community. Here is my blog discussing my personal experience and advice for interacting with people with speech impediments.

My name

Feel free to call me either Sherry or Dongqi (东琪). Dongqi (东琪) means fine jade from the east. I’ve had the name “Sherry” since I was 8, and it originally comes from Ai Haibara.
